SMART Table

Meet the world’s first multitouch, multiuser table for primary education. The SMART Table interactive learning center lets students get hands-on with collaborative activities – and the more hands the merrier.
The SMART Table is a versatile learning center where groups of students can create, explore and discover together on the durable screen. The interface is so intuitive that even the youngest child can play games and plunge into learning activities in no time.

Watch the video to get some ideas about how the SMART Table could be used in the classroom. How long do you think it will take for this technology to be integrated into classrooms? How would you use this with your students?

I saw the video and it is definitely a sales pitch. It didn't give enough information about the product. From what I saw and heard, the product seems bulky. Where would a teacher put this table in a classroom that has limited space? I would need more information about this product before deciding to even consider it. It sounds like a great idea, but I am not sure it would be popular in a classoom. It would be too expensive and my guess expensive to repair. I do like the fact that the table is customizable, it promotes collaboration, it holds digital pictures, video clips, provides flash tools and images. These tools would save a teacher time and space for storing data. The Smart table can be visually appealing, motivate students and keep them interested in what they are learning. I like that it has the capacity to provide student-centered activiites. A plus for teachers.

Upon reading the description and viewing the video, I found this "new innovation" both versatile and creative. However, since my discipline is high school biology, the smart table is impractical for my classroom. I am somewhat familiar with the smart board and I presume that the smart table is more "portable version" of the smart board. It will be a great resource for elementary students because it is interactive and fun. However, teachers might find this difficult to manipulate and access. I like how this smart table will make the classroom student-centered and encourage students to collaborate and be creative. However, for now, it seems premature to implement the smart table into the classroom just based on its benefits.

While this seems like a great concept, I don't see an interactive table like this one working in a district for many reasons. First,it's expensive or at least I think it is. I know the price of a smartboard and this new product is sure to be even more money. Secondly, I don't see children working with this table treating it as gently as they need to be. As long there is a Smartboard in the room I don't see why anyone would feel the need for this table. Lastly, with any new product comes glitches. Why waist tax payers money? The video overall did not provide me with much information, but yet I was left "oo-ing" and "ahh-ing". It may be useful in student-centered activites but so are good old fashioned stations with minilla folders!

As a future high school literature teacher, the likelyhood of SMART Tables being used in my classroom is slim. While it looks like a wonderful tool for young children, it doesn't transition for students who are growing into young adults. If I were going to teach kindergarten, I think I'd love to have a few of these in my classroom. However, Christina and Jennifer noted reasons why it is impractical. The tables appear bulky and using them would take over a classroom. The tables themselves must be expensive (though searching did not bring up a price). There is also time and cost to train teachers to use it effectively. What happens when the table glitches or breaks? As Christina said, low-tech strategies can be effective and student-centered, and manilla folders can't short-circuit. Katherine Dalton

Although this Smart Table seems like a great idea at first sight, I do not think that I would want one in my classroom. I feel as though it would be nothing more than a distraction in the classroom. Why do we need to go further than a smart board? I personally feel as though schools could spend their money on more realistic things such as school supplies for the students who cannot afford them rather than on a smart table. Yes it’s futuristic and interactive, but like I said, I do not think that it is necessary for students to have.

After looking at the smart table, I thought it was a great tool for elementary school classrooms. It seems like a very creative way to engage the students. You can see from the videos that the students are really enjoying the learning experience. I thought it was a great way to encourage group learning and since it seems a little more hands on,I thought it may work better than a smart board for younger children. That said, however, I think the opposite would be true for high school classrooms. I think older students would benefit more from the smart board, rather than the smart table. --Colleen Corrigan

The technology behind Smart Table is awesome. Its a great educational tool espicially for younger kids, but not for High School students. I am positive that H.S kids will be distracted by it.I would rather prefer a smart board, which the whole class can see. Beside, you need more than one table per class room for the students to work in a group.

I think the smart table would be a wonderful addition to an elementary classroom. I have seen the enthusiastic response the Smartboard brings to a third grade classroom in my pre-professional student teaching, all the students want to use the board and that is impractical, so having access to smart tables would allow for collaborative hands on interactive learning, as well as creating a more enjoyable learning experience. The eight thousand dollar price tag makes this purchase improbable in today’s economy, especially multiple tables per classroom, but think of the excitement of the learners, it would appeal to a variety of learning styles and could be used as an incentive for cooperation. Will these technologies remain relevant long enough or provide enough significant measureable positive results to warrant the kind of expenditure they would incur remains to be seen.

In my opinion, the video for the "SMART Table" would definitely spark the interest of an elementary school teacher (where money/funds are no object). Unfortunately, there aren't many districts that could easily afford one of these new pieces of technology, yet alone more than one per classroom! As for myself, I am a high school Spanish teacher, so this piece of technology as cute as it may be, would not be applicable for me to use in my classroom. I do believe that it seems like a fun way for kids to get involved with one another, but I don't think it's something that is absolutely necessary to have in a classroom. I feel that this technology will be integrated into the classroom very quickly, if it is readily affordable. Teachers are always looking for something new and fun to spark the interest of their students!

Smart table is an interactive teaching tool that engages students in collaborative work. Smart table is simple to setup which can give teachers the opportunity to begin integrating technology in their classroom. This tactile instruction can be beneficial to all students. This innovative learning tool can definitely make learning a lot more fun. I believe that English language learners can also benefit from using this technology. Students’ collaborative group work gives students the opportunity to engage in interactive activities with their American counterparts.

Like, Kim, I feel that a “SMART Table” would absolutely motivate any educator. For instance, in my school there are Smart Boards available for teachers to use. However, there are no laptops to go with the Smart Boards. As a result, they are being underutilized or not being used at all for instructional purposes. I fear that in schools, like mine, the Smart Table will just be a “fad”. When implemented accurately and completely into a school it will absolutely be a benefit to the students as well as, the teachers.

I think that this is a very interesting piece of technology. It seems that the touch screens are the wave of the future and since so many people are able to use iphones and now the blackberry storm, its seems that people seem to really like the touch screen. It this increases peoples knowledge in technology then im all for it.

After watching the video, it seems to be focusing on elementary students. I don't know what kind of programs would be made available or be practical in a High School science classroom. Prehaps an animated dissection or something would work. I'm also not convinced you could use this for all students. While it may be a helpful tool for small groups of students, it would be less useful for large groups of students.\

I think that the SMART Board is a wonderful tool but I do not think that this table will go far in a High School setting. This table seems geared more towards the elementry levels and possibly (depending on the application) the middle school. The site does not do a good job of explaining what the table can do for our classrooms. Also, I do not see disctricts running out to fill classrooms with these tables, they are a bit pricy and money can be spent in other realistic ways.
