One Laptop Per Child

To create educational opportunities for the world's poorest children, the “One Laptop Per Child” initiative provides each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning. When children have access to this type of tool they get engaged in their own education. They learn, share, create, and collaborate. They become connected to each other, to the world and to a brighter future. Go to the website: http://laptop.org/en/ and watch the video by clicking on the number 1“Vision” link. Why do you think the five principles are so important to the program and to the education of children throughout the world? Speculate on what you think the long range benefits of this program will be?

Children are the future of any nation. The development of the country depends on their future generations. So its very important for these future citizens, specially of underdeveloped countries to be educated. What better way to educate them than to give them laotops. I think its an excellent idea and everyone should support it.

I think that this is a great idea. I also think that everyone should participate. Do I think that it will happen? That I can't answer but I definitely think that it should. Kids, ALL kids are our future. Therefore each and every one of them should be given equal opportunities to reach their highest potential no matter where they are from.

"One Laptop per Child" is a wonderful way to integrate technology to educate our students all over the world. I agree with Caitlin that we may not see this adaptation right away. However, it definitely should happen as soon as possible. All children are entitled to be educated and engaged, and this mission hopes to do just that; to make sure that no child gets left out. Computers with internet access will be distributed to students of poorer places and this will allow underprivileged students to learn, explore, and discover. All educators should actively support this mission and contribute to make this happen as soon as possible so that our students are free to "grow and adapt" in this changing world.

This sounds like a fascinating program. I think the five principles of the program will make it effective. The fact that children get to keep their laptops means they can learn at any time of day, and have access to the world at any time. I love the idea that it's programmed with open source code, meaning that any number of clever coders can add to and build upon the programs installed on the computer already. With this kind of computer, possibilities really are endless. - Kat Dalton

This program is a great idea. I agree with Caitlin and Jennifer, in that all children deserve to be educated. I thought it was great that the laptops are designed for students who attend schools outdoors. Having built in Internet access also allows students to learn anytime or anywhere. More people should be made aware of this program so that it can grow more quickly. I believe that ignorance fuels hatred and many of the world problems that exist today are a direct result of the lack of education in many underdeveloped countries. Providing students with access to the Internet is literally like opening a door to a whole new world for a child. Hopefully, a program like this will create a future for students around the globe, where laptops are as common of an object as pens and pencils are today. --Colleen Corrigan

I think the One Laptop per Child program is a wonderful idea especially in countries where the children do not have books. It is a greener way to education; I feel that implementing this idea in our own country would be a great way to cut down on excesses. I agree that lack of education and knowledge of each others cultures causes fear and anxieties in the world; and that implementing this program for the very young my be a step in the direction of one day achieving global understanding.

I think this is a wonderful idea. I wonder where this program started and if it plans to touch upon every country or just those in poverty. What about the young United States students that can not access the Internet from home? Some of my high school students do not have a computer at home and are too embarrassed to admit it. I think that this is a wonderful program that will help bring these kids up to speed. I would hope that along with receiving a laptop, the students would get some sort of instructional period on how to use the Internet. I wonder where the money is coming from to purchase these?

I believe that this program is terrific. It will most definitely facilitate learning in any environment or circumstance. I can relate to this fairly well because I grew up in a developing nation where computers were scarce. Now almost every child in Guyana has access to a computer because of programs like, One Laptop Per Child. I foresee that, because of programs like this one, every child around the world will have an opportunity to have an equal education.

It is a wonderful idea to equip every child in developing countries with this child-size laptop. Children in the most remote regions of the globe are given the opportunity to tap into their own potential, and to be exposed to a whole world of ideas. The One Child Per Laptop approach enables people to take part in the information society and people living in urban and rural areas equal access to knowledge.

The five principles are so important to the program, and they all intertwine to form one big picture. These principles are so important because they are not limiting the kids to a specific time during the day where they have to learn but instead letting them take these laptops home as early as the age of 6 and expanding their minds, instead of going home and sitting in front of a T.V. Many would argue that giving kids access to the internet can expose them to dangerous things, but in my opinion everything is internet based and by limiting this you are limiting the child’s ability to navigate the web and learn.
What I believe is the most important element to such a program is not making anyone feel “left out”. There are plenty of times in school where some kids are less fortunate then others and are at a disadvantage. This program puts everyone on an even playing field with regards to providing each child with a computer. I truly believe that there is not going to be any extremely important long range benefits in regards to this program. Yes, it can help a child early in the life but once a child turns a certain age no matter how much you have pushed them or provided them with the necessities they need to succeed it is up to the individual person to want to succeed.

I believe that "One Laptop Per Child" is an excellent approach to help nations who are lacking in technology, resources, and money. Every child deserves the chance to experience the magic of technology, especially in an educational type setting. I believe that these five principles are so important to the program and to the education of children throughout the world because these principles not only define the program and its goals, but they also serve the purpose of demonstrating their effectiveness of what they will achieve as a whole. It also doesn't discriminate and aims to help ALL students take part in the program. I believe that there will be many long range benefits of this program, including higher student achievement, more updated and interesting information provided to the students, and a higher interest in learning.

I think that this is good idea for schools to take part in. Kids should be able to use technology fluentley and become the teachers of even newer technology. Having laptops is just the begining of this. If kids are able to use laptops easily, they will be able to come up with even better idea over the course of time to help many people out
