Teacher Education Can't Ignore Technology

Do you think that the kind of thoughtful technology integration mentioned in the article is happening in classrooms today? How would you integrate technology in an ideal classroom?

While reading, I thought this article explains and expresses a lot of the issues and concerns in education right now. Today we see many teachers that do not know how to incorporate technology into the lessons in meaningful ways. We are also exposed to teachers that are stuck in their ways or too 'lazy' to change how they have taught the same concepts for the last twenty years. Since technology plays such a large role in our society, I think it is imperative for teachers to be educated on technology and know how they can best develop and implement meaningful lessons in the classroom. While I don't agree with have students create their own videogame in classrooms to learn about social studies, I think that they are tons of valuable resources and ideas on the web that teachers can use to make learning interactive and engaging. Ultimately, in my ideal classroom, I think it is important to have a SmartBoard that will engage all students and iPads that can allow even our students with disabilities to engage and learn just like the rest of their peers. I do not think that teachers can ignore technology anymore because it is such a big part of our lives.

I do believe that technology is being used like this in some classrooms but not many. Most education programs do not include technology courses where teacher candidates can learn what programs and tools are out there for them to use in their classrooms. If they are not taught these and they don't already know about them then they are not going to be used in the classroom. Technology is a crucial part of the classroom today because it is a crucial part of the students household and they need that stimuli and change in instruction style to keep them interested. In my ideal classroom students would have laptops to take notes on and view the presentations as we go over them in class. There would be interactive assignments to do online with other students and research from the world wide web. However i would not totally eliminate the simple style of teaching through experiments and the outdoors because students do need to learn to appreciate the world around us. If we use too much technology students will be lost in the old ways of the world like filling out a paper job application.

Today there is still an issue with teachers not using the technology of today to their advantage and it is a big problem. It is either because they are stuck in their own ways that they have used for years or because new and old teachers alike don't understadn how to fully use the technology we have to it's highest potential. I think ideally all of these things mentioned in the article would be great and some teachers I know or have spent time with in their classrooms do use them. I would also say most of the newer and younger teachers are the ones taking the time to actually implement these forms of technology to better the classroom experiences.

I beleive smartboards are key to the future of technological advances in classrooms and that we will only continue to see an uprising of more useful technology within classroom walls because it's a shame that more learning goes on outside the classroom than inside of it.

I do believe that teachers are trying to remain updated with the newest technology out there that students are interested in. Technology that increases participation from students is the best kind of technology that teachers can implement into the classroom. Students need to stay involved in the lesson in order for them to process the information. Video games and technology such as that is a great idea as long as it truely relates to the subject matter in a beneficial way. I think interactive technology is important to implement into the classroom but i also feel that learning without technology is benefical too. Students learned for many years in a classroom setting without any technology, so it is unfortunate that we now feel students can not learn without the use of technology. It is a great way to get students involved and interested, but it is not absolutely necessary in order for students to learn.

I do believe that technology is the future, I also believe that it has to be implemented to have students to work in groups and to still be interactive with each other as much as the activities. Using video games may be a creative way to get students involved in the material; however, is it a way to get students to interact? Are we using technology to substitute for physical interaction? Throughout my education in college, I have taken a course completely online, without setting foot near a classroom and having any interaction with the other students in the course. Is this the ultimate goal for the future, to make it that students can not interact without using a technological device.

I see it now, people are in a group in a social setting and are communicating with others or searching the web on their cell phones and not giving attention to the people who are just a few feet in front of them.

I couldn't agree more with the major topic of this article. The question of whether or not teacher candidates are being adequately prepared is one that many schools really should use as a self-assessing tool.
For example, C. Dawydko mentions that many teachers today don't know how to incorporate technology into their lessons in meaningful ways. What a travesty. There really are tons of valuable resources on the net that educators can tap in to and utilize in making their lessons better. In turn they will see their students' reactions and truly they will be transforming themselves into better teachers. Shouldn't that be the ultimate goal as professionals?
